Acne occurs when a hair follicle becomes clogged with dead skin cells and a type of oil called sebum. Sebum is needed to lubricate a person’s skin and hair. With acne, the sebum mixed with the debris clogs the follicle and causes it to enlarge until it produces a comedone. Sometimes it breaks, which allows bacteria to enter.
